MORE THAN 500,000 APPALACHIAN POWER CUSTOMERS RESTORED TO POWER
Restoration update announced

July 8, 2012

Charleston, W.Va., July 8, 2012 –   Appalachian Power has restored electricity to more than 516,000 customers in just over a week. Approximately 57,000 customers remain without power as of early Sunday afternoon.

In West Virginia, 45,000 of the company’s half-million customers remain without electric service.

In Virginia, 12,000 of the company's half-million customers remain without electric service. Restoration in hardest hit areas of Roanoke, Lynchburg and Lovingston is taking the longest because of significant damage to Appalachian’s facilities. Restoration in these areas has been pushed to Monday.

“We have about 5,100 people working in the field and as crews finish up in certain areas they will shift to the places still needing help,” said Phil Wright, vice president of distribution operations. “We will not lessen the pace until everyone is back in service. This is an all-hands-on-deck effort.”

There are approximately 600 outages affecting 10 or fewer customers including hundreds of outages affecting only one home or business. Often in these situations, there are problems with people being able to receive power. For example, fuses or circuit breakers in the home could have tripped and halted power or tree limbs could have fallen on the line serving a home.

Customers who are still without power should call to re-report it to Appalachian Power’s 24-hour Customer Solutions Center at (WV) 1-800-982-4237; (VA) 1-800-956-4237 or (Tenn) 1-800-967-4237.
