Porch lights are one of the most used lights at home. Customers who replace five of their most frequently used light fixtures, including their porch lights, with ENERGY STAR fixtures can reduce energy usage and save up to $40 a year on energy costs.
Beyond replacing fixtures, customers can reduce energy usage by replacing old incandescent light bulbs with light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs. LEDs are one of today's most energy-efficient lighting technologies.
Quality LED light bulbs last longer, are more durable, and offer comparable or better light quality than other types of lighting, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. LEDs can last up to 15 years and up to 25 times longer than traditional bulbs. Replacing bulbs helps you use less energy, save money and help the environment.
By 2027, widespread use of LEDs could save the equivalent electricity generated each year by 44 large electric power plants. That is a total savings of more than $30 billion at today's electricity prices, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
In addition to changing bulbs, simply turning off lights when not needed is one of the easiest ways to start saying. ENERGY STAR estimates leaving one light on for 8 hours a day can cost about $20 a year.
