A leaky faucet may seem like a small annoyance. But that little drip can waste over 3,000 gallons each year. Fixing leaks not only saves water, but also saves the energy you use to heat that water. Luckily, leaks are simple to fix.
Most of the time, when a leak is above the sink, replacing the valve stem assembly will do the trick. First, shut off the flow of water to the fixture. Then:
- Remove the handles on both the hot and cold sides
- Remove the collar nuts that hold the cartridges in place
- Remove the valve stems, noting the alignment in the hole
- Replace the stems, using a bit of plumber’s grease
- Replace the collar nuts and handles
- Turn the supply valves back on and check for leaks
Little leaks have a big effect on your water and energy waste. Fixing them will make your home more comfortable and efficient.
