Pike Co. 911 communications boosted by radio tower donation from Kentucky Power

July 10, 2024

A no-cost boost in 911 connectivity is coming to Pike County by way of radio waves. Kentucky Power recently donated the Weddington Branch radio tower in the Coal Run area to Pike County Emergency Management to reenforce emergency response in the rural area, providing essential communication infrastructure that will improve coordination and efficiency during crises.

Bob Shurtleff, external affairs manager for Kentucky Power, said the power company wanted to provide a solution to the critical need for enhanced communication capabilities in support of the area’s dedicated first responders.

“Understanding the vital role that effective communication plays in emergency situations,” Shurtleff said, “we decided to make use of the tower after our electrical infrastructure was moved to a new location. Rather than removing the tower, which would have been the protocol, we’re donating the tower to Pike County to help improve communications during emergencies.”

The radio tower donation will be recognized by the Pike County Emergency Management during the May 2 board meeting at the organization’s office on Division Street in Pikeville.

“Kentucky Power believes in giving back to the communities that support us," Shurtleff said. "We’re proud to stand alongside our local first responders and support their invaluable efforts to keep our community safe."
