In 2017, we launched Appalachian Sky, an initiative to aggressively attract aerospace and aviation industry to our central Appalachia service region. 14 counties served by us have been certified as AeroReady by leading industry consultants. Appalachian Sky builds upon this important certification with data that shows that aerospace can thrive in the area.
A regional workforce analysis in our territory showed that coal miners and steelworkers, many of whom lost their jobs in recent years, have highly desirable metal working skills sought by many aerospace companies. The study, which was funded in part with our economic development grants, concluded that there were eight times the national average of skilled metal workers in the region.
